Traditional British Food Recipes

Maybe you've heard of British specialities like fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding, or bangers and mash. But do you know how to make them? In this article, I'll share simple recipes for making delicious and filling traditional British food.

### Fish and Chips

Fish and chips is an iconic British meal consisting of crispy fried fish and fries. It is usually served with malt vinegar sauce, mayonnaise, or ketchup. Here are the ingredients and steps you will need to make fish and chips:

**Ingredients:**

- 4 pieces of boneless and skinless white fish (e.g. cod, haddock, or pollock)

- 1 cup wheat flour

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- 1 glass of cold beer

- Cooking oil to taste

- 800g potatoes, peeled and cut into slices

- Salt and pepper to taste

- Malt vinegar, mayonnaise or ketchup for dressing

**Steps:**

1. Dry the fish with paper towels and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly pour in the beer while mixing well to form a thick, frothy batter.

3. Heat cooking oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Dip the fish into the batter and fry until browned and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove and drain on kitchen paper.

4. Fry the potatoes in the same oil until cooked through and crispy, about 15-20 minutes. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. Sprinkle with salt to taste.

5. Serve the fish and chips with the sauce of your choice.

### Yorkshire Pudding

Yorkshire pudding is a toasted bread that is fluffy and hollow in the centre. It is usually served as an accompaniment to grilled meat dishes and sauces. Here are the ingredients and steps you will need to make Yorkshire pudding:

**Ingredients:**

- 4 eggs

- 1 glass of milk

- 1 cup flour

- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- 4 tablespoons beef fat or vegetable oil

- Roast meat sauce for gravy

**Steps:**

1. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and milk until well combined. Add the flour and salt and mix well to form a smooth, runny dough. Let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator.

2. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius. Divide the tallow or vegetable oil into 12 muffin moulds. Place in the oven for 10 minutes to heat through.

3. Remove the moulds from the oven and pour the batter into each mould until almost full. Place back in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and browned. Do not open the oven during the baking process to prevent the Yorkshire pudding from deflating.

4. Serve the Yorkshire pudding with roast beef sauce.

### Bangers and Mash

Bangers and mash is a simple meal consisting of sausages and mashed potatoes. It is usually served with onion gravy and vegetables. The following are the ingredients and steps you will need to make bangers and mash:

**Ingredients:**

- 8 pieces of sausage (e.g. pork sausage, beef sausage, or vegetarian sausage)

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

- 800g potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges

- 4 tablespoons butter

- 1/4 glass of milk

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 2 tablespoons flour

- 2 glasses of meat stock

- 2 onions, thinly sliced

- 1 teaspoon sugar

- 1 teaspoon vinegar

- Boiled or stir-fried vegetables for the side (e.g. carrots, peas, or broccoli)

**Steps:**

1. Heat vegetable oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the sausages until cooked through and browned, about 15-20 minutes. Remove and set aside.

2. Blanch the potatoes in salted boiling water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes with a fork or potato masher until smooth and creamy.

3. In a small saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of sausage fat or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the flour and stir well until lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Slowly pour in the meat stock while stirring well to form a thick, smooth sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

4. In the same frying pan as the sausage, sauté the onion until wilted and browned, about 15 minutes. Add sugar and vinegar and stir well. Cook until the onions are caramelised, about 5 minutes.

5. Serve bangers and mash with onion sauce and vegetables.
